Android smart devices are all the rage today and there are certainly many to choose from, but not all androids are created equally. One of the new devices on the market is the Samsung Galaxy S droid with a 5″ screen. This MP3 is a force to be reckoned with. The Galaxy has tons of features.

5″ screen

WiFi

multi-media player

HD video playback

800×480 screen resolution

1.3 Watt stereo speaker

3D experience

Up to 50 hours music play

Up to 8 hours video play

Social Hub

Qik video

1 GHz speed processor

8 GB memory

3.2 megapixel camera

Think Free

Free applications

Google services

So as you can see you can do just about anything you need to do with the Galaxy S. The WiFi allows you to access the internet anywhere that has WiFi hotspots. Multimedia player gives you the opportunity to do all of the things you love whether it be listening to music, watch videos, or play games. With an 800×480 screen resolution it makes everything you do look better and with the 1.3 watt stereo speaker it will sound clearer too. The Galaxy S also has a long battery life so your able to listen, watch, play or keep up socially for longer periods of time without having
to charge your phone. Social Hub helps keep you connected with all of your favorite social sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and more.

This android device is also equipped with Qik video which helps you capture those special moments with video and then share them with friends and family through social networking sites. The 1GHz speed helps speed things along so you can do everything you need to do fast. There is also a lot of internal memory to save all the data, music, or pics you care to save, but if 8GB’s is not enough there is an SD card slot so you can add more memory if you please and
to take those pictures that you may want to save or share you have a 3.2 megapixel camera to do that with. Don’t forget to shop for your favorite apps, many of which are free. So if you are looking for a high powered, durable, high functioning android device, the Galaxy S can do it for you.

Now what about the Galaxy 3.6″ device that we have all heard of but have yet to see in the United States? Unfortunately you will be hard pressed to find reasoning for this or when they plan on releasing here in the U.S. but it is currently available in the UK for around $242. The Galaxy 3.6″ device is being called the smartphone without the phone. Yes, that’s right, it can do everything but be used as a phone. This android has plenty of other features though. The Samsung Galaxy has a 1 GHz OMAP processor 16GB or 8 GB of memory with expandable storage with a removable SD card. It also has a 3.65″ screen with the ability to connect to WiFi and 2 megapixel camera and VGA camera for video calls. This is a great multimedia device that can keep you in touch through email and social networking sites no problem and many other features too. This is a great lower alternative for the Galaxy S 5.

When I started networking I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t even think I was “networking”. I just didn’t want to go home right after work and had been invited to GeekMeet and other “networking events”. I showed up to drink.

It took me a while to get used to meeting new people and opening up. I got better as the night went on. Liquid courage works every time! But I was a shy guy initially and I just needed help meeting new people and feeling comfortable in this new environment. I mean most people were wearing nice shirts and slacks. I was showing up in cargo shorts and a t-shirt. This was the Internet boom after all.

But we all know what happened after the boom – the bust. And in Dallas, the bust was ugly. I think 80% of the people I knew were in telecom or had an Internet startup. And within a year they were all laid off – twice. And so was I.

I saw the writing on the wall and knew I’d never be able to replace my overpaid salary by taking a new job with someone else. So I decided to partner with a good colleague of mine and started Holotrope Marketing. And to launch our new venture we threw a party! I invited a few of my close friends and a few of the people I had been “drinking beer” with the past 3 years with at GeekMeet.

We expected about 40 or 50 attendees but more than 200 people showed up at our “launch”. While walking around and thanking people for showing up I was regularly asked what we needed now that we were in business for ourselves. I replied, “We need projects. Cash would do, but you probably want us to do something for it.” In more than several occasions, the person replied with “Great! Why don’t you come talk to me next week and tell me what you have in mind. I have $xx and need to spend it before year end.”

I was honestly shocked that so many people had wanted to help us out. Most of which had never worked with me before. When asked why they were so ready to give me projects and help us out, here is what I learned about the my past three years of “drinking together”:

I did my job well – or at least that is what they heard about me.

I was very good with my clients – or at least that is what they heard about me.

I was forward thinking and could solve “creative” problems – this was definitely the beer talking.

No one ever had a bad thing to say about me – no girlfriends allowed

I was readily available for help whenever someone needed anything I could help with. And if I couldn’t help them I tried to help them find someone who could.

For the reasons listed above (mostly the last two bullets), my networking buddies were willing to now help me when I needed it. And they came through with flying colors! That night I learned that while I thought I was just out drinking beer with other professionals, I was actually building a network of contacts that were interested in my well being and willing to help when I needed them.

Had I waited until I needed them, those contacts would not have been there. Or at least they would not have known me or trusted me enough to help me at that moment. It takes time to build relationships.

So, don’t wait until you need a job, need a new project, or need a new venture to start networking. Do it now. Right now. Find a group and start building relationships. If you are technical or in the technical field, then I believe GeekMeet is the best networking group you will find. But regardless of where you network, just get out there and start today.

Well maybe not national, yet, but we are doubling our size in October! GeekMeet will be in Raleigh, NC starting in October, taking us from just one city in Dallas, Tx to 2 cities and 2 states. It’s been in the works all summer and it’s finally time to pull the plug and have our first happy hour. Exact location and date will be set next week so stayed tuned for more details.

When the announcement is sent, everyone in Dallas will also receive the invite. I would appreciate it if everyone could forward this on to any contacts you have in the Raleigh area. Our success has always been driven by word of mouth and so I know your recommendations will go a long way to making Raleigh a successful launch for the organization.

If you are in the Raleigh area, be sure to check the calendar and come to a happy hour! If you know of other cities that are need of GeekMeet happy hours, please let me know so we can add those to our growth plan and look for leaders in those cities to help get us off the ground.

Thanks and I’ll see you at an event soon!
